Microsoft Kin One & Two

What is it?
I am not sure if Microsoft likes to fail or I am not their target market, but the Microsoft Kin One and Two seems like it belongs to back when the T-Mobile Sidekick was first introduced. When there are operating systems like the iPhone OS 4 and Android and super phones like the Sprint EVO 4G on the horizon, the Kin One and Two seems like a kid’s toys.

What it has?
- GSM 850/900/1800/1900
- HSDPA
- 16M colors TFT touchscreen
- Memory: 4GB for One / 8GB for Two
- Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g
- Bluetooth v2.1 with A2DP
- USB 2.0
- Camera: 5MP for One / 8MP for Two
- Video: Standard for One / 720p for Two
- Some variant of Windows 7 Phone OS
- GPS
- Social networking out the ying yang

What it needs?
I am glad that Microsoft tries to do something different with their User Interface instead of doing something similar to the iPhone (i.e. Android and WebOS), but I think the solution Microsoft came up with, which started with the Zune, is a confusing panoramic-crazed step-child.

As for the phones, when you all you have are two mediocre ones, it is best to just shoot out a press release and let it be. To create an Apple-like launch event for it is just a waste of time. Then again, what do I know, I am not the one with millions of dollar to spend on market and consumer research.

Apple iPhone OS 4

What is it?
The very anticipated event from Apple came and went today and we are gifted with the iPhone OS 4. There are a lot of overdue features which will be available this June with some still missing. Here are the main seven “Tentpoles”.

What it has?
- Multitasking: Seven multitasking services which will allow tasks to be performed in the background while preserving performance and battery life.
- Folders: Organize apps into folders with drag-and-drop simplicity.
- Enchaned Mail: See messages from all your email accounts displayed together in a unified inbox.
- iBooks: Apple’s way to browse, buy, and read books on a mobile device.
- iAd: Apple’s mobile advertising platform that allows ads to be displayed and have interactivty inside apps.
- Enterprise: Enhancements to security, scalability, and compatibility for IT Managers.
- Game Center: Invite friends to play a game, start a multiplayer game through matchmaking and track achievements and compare high scores on a leader board.

What it needs?
The iPhone OS 4 is definitely a step in the right direction for Apple and is required for it to stay competitive with Android and Windows Phone 7. Some of the things that were missing are 3G tethering, deleting default apps, and list of recent notifications like Android.

Sprint EVO 4G (HTC Supersonic)

What is it?
A day after Sprint emailed their customer with a teaser, they released the mega-phone named EVO 4G, aka, HTC Supersonic. One of the biggest selling point besides the Android OS and 4G speed is the ability to share its 4G speeds with 8 devices via Wi-Fi!!

What it has?
- Qualcomm Snapdragon QSD8650 (1GHz) processor
- 4.3″ capacitive display with pinch-to-zoom and tactile feedback
- Android 2.1 OS
- Sprint Navigation, with turn-by-turn driving directions and 3D maps
- Updated HTC Sense UI
- Visual voicemail
- 3G/4G Mobile Hotspot capability – connects up to eight Wi-Fi enabled devices
- 4G data speeds (WiMAX) – average download speeds of 3-6 Mbps
- 8MP autofocus camera with dual LED flash and 1.3MP front-facing camera
- 720p video recording
- HDMI output port
- Built-in kickstand for hands-free viewing
- FM radio and Amazon MP3 store
- Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP Stereo and EDR
- Built-in Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g
- Digital compass, G-Sensor, proximity sensor, light sensor, GPS
- microSD card slot (supports up to 32GB)
- 4.8″ x 2.6″ x .5″ at 6 ounces
- Memory: 1GB ROM, 512MB RAM

What it needs?
It is hard to find flaws on the Sprint EVO 4G, I am just jealous since I have AT&T and cannot simply insert my sim card into this mega-phone. It is pretty amazing to pack all these features into slim phone, but one thing that can be improve is the 65K colors screen – 16M colors should be the norm now.

Nokia C5 Smartphone

What is it?
In the sea of iPhone-styled cell phones, it is refreshing to see a simple-looking candy-bar styled. The Nokia C5 is a slim “classic” cell phone with larger buttons. However, do not be fooled, it comes with a lot of modern features and a Symbian operation system.

What it has?
- 2.2″ TFT screen with 16M colors at 240 x 320 pixels
- 50MB of internal memory
- microSD slot capable of 16GB
- 3.15MP camera with LED flash
- Symbian OS v9.3, Series 60 rel. 3.2
- Stereo FM radio with RDS
- A-GPS with Ovi Maps 3.0
- Facebook (linked to contacts), YouTube, Flickr, and MySpace
- 112 x 46 x 12.3 mm at 89.3 grams

What it needs?
When available, the Nokia C5 will costs a little under $200 USD unlocked, therefore, it does not need much of anything else for the market it is going after. One thing that I can point out is the lack of WiFi. Being a low-end, classic cell phone, you cannot expect people to be subscribed to 3G data plans. Therefore the ability to jump WiFi networks to post Facebook updates would be much appreciated.
